What do Mr. Zayac's students think of his class?

"I have decided to write to you in appreciation of your services to me while you were my Biology teacher in Kabompo. I made it because of your simple and clear explanation. So Mister Zayac Scott, I say a million thanks to you."

In my own words:

In my classroom you will see students who are interested and engaged in challenging hands on activities. Each table in my 5th grade class is a bustle of activity. After posing questions and forming hypotheses about the human circulatory system, students are developing experiments they can perform to find support for their hypotheses. One group is off to talk to the P.E. teacher to see if they can borrow skipping ropes to test different types of exercise, while another group is deciding if someone should stand in a meat cooler for ten minutes to see if temperature has any affect on heart rate! These activities are relevant and engaging and require students to use their creativity and critical thinking skills. I believe that developing critical thinking skills to solve problems is an invaluable skill for today's youth.

In my classroom you will find activities where all students have opportunities to succeed. I believe that every student can be successful and that it is my job to find the unique strengths and learning styles of each student. When students are provided with a safe learning environment and are given numerous opportunities to succeed, they become more self-confident and curious about the world around them.

You will also see my students working on projects outside of the classroom. My grade 6 students spend time in the library conducting research on HIV/AIDS. They also interview community health professionals and invite them to make presentations in our class. In the computer lab we use Excel and Word to create PowerPoint presentations for our parents and community leaders. We also spend time in other classrooms sharing what we have learned and explaining projects we have undertaken in the school. I believe that valuable life skills are acquired when students take their learning out of the classroom and apply it to real world situations.

After school you will find me giving extra tutorials, coaching, refereeing or working with students in our school garden. These after school activities are a favorite part of my day and are a time when I can really get to know my students and watch them excel in new areas.

Both in and out of the classroom I have the tremendous task of helping to shape the future. No other job has such great responsibilities and yet such great rewards. I would be honored to be given the opportunity to help shape the future at your school!
